How to Buff a Floor

1. PREPARE. First, prepare both the floor and the surrounding area. If this is an area with a lot of foot traffic, place some kind of marker around the area (e.g., orange cones, a sign, caution tape) so that people don’t try to walk on the floor. If there will be little to no foot traffic, just notify anyone who might walk through. Then, thoroughly clean the floor. Start by sweeping or dry mopping. Come back in afterward with a wet mop, removing as much dirt and grime as possible. It is important that you start with a clean, dust-free floor.

2. BUFF. Now it’s time to learn how to buff a floor! Attach a buffing pad to the buffing machine and connect the electrical plug to an outlet. Turn the machine. You’ll want to start in the area furthest away from the entrance, working on the edges first and then moving toward the center, careful not to overlap very much (about 2-4 inches). Move in large, 10-foot sections, gently moving the machine from side to side so that the buffing pad can smooth any scratches and bumps. If you’re working on a very large area, replace the buffing pad when it becomes dirty or worn out.

3. CLEAN UP. When the floor is smooth and you’re satisfied with your work, turn off the buffing machine. Then, bring back out your cleaning supplies. Again, you’ll want to sweep or dry mop first, removing all of the powder you’ve shaved off the floor. Then, wet mop to remove all the excess dust and powder. Now all you have to do is put away the signs and clean your buffing machine, buffing pads, and mop. You’re finished! You’ve just learned how to buff a floor!
